The City of Doha and its Prominent Features and Areas

Doha is the capital city of the state of Qatar which is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. It has a population of more than 1 million people. It is also included among the municipalities of Qatar. It is also the largest city of Qatar containing almost 60% of the overall population of Qatar. It is also considered as a major economic centre of the country. It is also the seat of the government of Qatar being ruled by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. It is also a centre for research and education as the area of Education City is situated in it.

The word Doha has its origin from the Arabic word ad-dawha which means the big tree. The early history of the area points to the fact that Doha was initially a fishing village at first. The area gradually developed and became what we see as present day Doha. In 1825, a war broke out between Qatar and Bahrain as a result of which Doha was left mostly destroyed and severely damaged. The area again began to develop in 1882 after the building of Al-Wajbah fortress in the south western part of Doha by Al Rayyan. In 1883, a dispute between Qatar and Ottoman arose. Qatari forces led by Qassim bin Mohammad Al Thani defeated Ottomans. The city gained prominence and was made the capital of British protectorate of Qatar in 1916. The city remained the capital of the nation after its independence.

The city of Qatar is divided into several districts and neighborhoods. Among these are Al-Bidda, Bin Mahmoud, Al Dafna, Al Hilal, Madinat Khalifa, Al Assiry, Al Mamoura, Al Markhiya, Al Nasr, Old Airport, Onaiza, Qutaifiya, Ras Abu Aboud, Al Sadd, Rumeilah, Al Waab, Wadi Al Sail and West Bay. Among these Bin Mahmoud is an important residential area in the city. Al Markhiya is a neighborhood in which a number of cultural and sports institutions are present including Al Markhiya Sports Club and Al Markhiya Art Gallery. Ras Abu Aboud consists of a number of hotels. Wadi Al Sail is a district which has undergone a lot of renovation and development in the recent years.

Other prominent areas include Al Sadd Doha which is a residential area consisting of hundreds of residencies. The area contains several malls. The area is also famous for its Royal Plaza. Another reason for the popularity of the area is its football team and sports complex. Another prominent area is Al Waab which consists of hundreds of residential apartments, villas and commercial and medical centers. The famous Doha Sports City is situated in this area. Different malls, schools and colleges are also present in this area.

West Bay Doha is another neighborhood in the city which has been recently developed. It is considered as one of the most prominent areas in the whole Doha. The area consists of modern structures and buildings such as skyscrapers and towers which distinguish this area from the other older areas of Doha. Al Dafna is another district in the city which is located at the seaside. The district is currently being developed into a central business district.
