The word Doha has its origin from the Arabic word ad-dawha which means the big tree. The early history of the area points to the fact that Doha was initially a fishing village at first. The area gradually developed and became what we see as present day Doha. In 1825, a war broke out between Qatar and Bahrain as a result of which Doha was left mostly destroyed and severely damaged. The area again began to develop in 1882 after the building of Al-Wajbah fortress in the south western part of Doha by Al Rayyan. In 1883, a dispute between Qatar and Ottoman arose. Qatari forces led by Qassim bin Mohammad Al Thani defeated Ottomans. The city gained prominence and was made the capital of British protectorate of Qatar in 1916. The city remained the capital of the nation after its independence.
