This was in relation to the treatment of permanent disabilities, acute illnesses, terminal illnesses, and other long term health conditions. Nine years later, and these figures have only increased. However, while the opportunity is there, not everybody is allowed to provide in home care. Rather, home care providers require a license, and the type of license they need varies depending on the type of agency they want to set up, mainly whether they want to work independently, or whether they want to hire nursing staff.

How to Get a Home Care License

In order to get a home care license, you must:

  1. Submit your application, which you can do through your State Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Generally speaking, the application form is available online, although you can request a paper copy if you prefer.
  2. Go through an inspection, which may be carried out by the HHS. They may also want to inspect the products and materials that you use in order to care for patients. In order to pass this inspection, you will need to make sure that you meet all the relevant requirements, which the HSS will list for you. Furthermore, you must keep proper business accounts and records. You are likely to have to showcase your annual budget, pricing structure, client demographics, service categories, and employee roles. If you pass the inspection, you will receive a license.

Should you want to work with clients on Medicaid or Medicare, you will need a special additional license. For this, you must contact your State Medicare agency. Furthermore, you will need a surety bond of $50,000, provided by an authorized surety company. The State Medicare will also conduct a full inspection of your business operations, which ensures that you meet all the relevant health and safety standards. Additionally, you need to have a minimum of seven clients, a steady revenue, and three months’ worth of operating funds.

Once you have a license, you will generally be surveyed yearly as well. Additionally, you may have to complete training before you can have a license.
