If you are over 50, your vacation requirements have probably changed. Not for you the crowded party resorts that 20-somethings love – while you want fun and activity, staying up all night drinking with rowdy almost-teenagers probably isn’t your bag. The following five travel destinations still provide fun, and chances are almost nil that an all night, raucous party will disturb your sleep.
Driving Tour of Monterey Wine Country and Big Sur
Start near Gorda and take a leisurely drive along the coast to view the breathtaking scenery; it should take about an hour to reach Big Sur on Highway 1 / Cabrillo Highway. Hike trails at one of the state parks during the day and stay at a luxury hotel at night; enjoy the gourmet food and world class California wine. Next, wind your way to Carmel (about 40 minutes away) and enjoy the beaches of ‘California’s Jewel’. Go whale watching – early April to mid-December is a good time to see Humpbacks and Blue Whales, while mid-December to April is prime Gray Whale watching time.
You can’t beat an Alaskan cruise for natural beauty. You’ll see glaciers and fjords up close and personal and enjoy the beauty of the wild countryside. Meals are often included in the price of your cruise, and some offer wine and dine packages, which cuts down on costs considerably.
Orlando offers many opportunities for grown-up fun. Visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Pleasure Island at Disney is great after dark with shopping, dining, and live entertainment. Orlando is chock-full of day spas and gourmet food is not hard to find. The lovely sands of Clearwater Beach are just a leisurely day trip away.
The Sonoran Sun Resort
Visit the Sonoran Sun Resort in Puerto Penasco, Mexico (often called Rocky Point, Mexico) for fun and sun right across the border. Visiting Rocky Point offers a host of things to see and do; ATV rides, tennis, and banana boat rides are popular activities, but you may want to lie by the excellent pool and soak up the warm sun or eat the delicious Mexican food served in their topnotch restaurant.
The Big Island is much less crowded than the other islands in the chain, and offers many more things to do and see. Hike the rain forest, swim with manta rays, watch for dolphins, go deep-sea fishing…the list of things to do is nearly endless.
